On an annual basis since 1984, Spanish astrologers have been holding meetings in which we exchange our experiences and the fruits of our researchs. These meetings are an important point of confluence for such an heterogeneous and dispersed group as the astrological one, which includes consultant astrologers as well as scholars and researchers, each coming from different areas of human experience; and also a wide number of lovers of this old and beautiful knowledge.

Around three hundred astrologers have had the opportunity of presenting their works during the seventeen conferences already held (filling the long list at the end of this page) since the first "Jornadas Astrológicas de Madrid" in 1984 in which, among other speakers, there were Demetrio Santos, André Barbault and François Gauquelin.

Our meetings are also great occasions for socialising in a friendly and loving atmosphere. Those who have been at the conferences keep in their hearts dear memories of the complementary activities that are held each year.

The "espicha" that welcomed us in Gijón; the "malagueñas" of Terromolinos; the "Cantigas of Alfonso X" by Ars Musicae and the harp concert by Emilio Cao in the cloister of the Monastery of Poio; the theatre-planetary play in the castle of Belver in Mallorca; the concert with Tibetan bells and guitar in Toledo; the irresistible humour of Eloy Arenas in Finestrat; the night bonfire and the the prize-giving of the Astro-literary Competition in Vilanova; the theatre play in Nuria and the walk around Bilbao; or the unforgettable image of a boat filled with two hundred astrologers sailing to the isle of Ons and the subsequent walk around it, culminating in the meeting all of them on top of the isle to contemplate the Sun setting in the Atlantic waters. These are some of the happy moments shared by Spanish astrologers.

The sites of our conferences are decided two years in advance. During the traditional assembly at the end of each conference, those entrusted with the organization of the following year's conference (appointed in the assembly of the previous year), present the project they are preparing and encourage people for the next meeting. Later on the assembly decides, among all the presented proposals, which persons will be in charge of the organization of the conference to be held in two years time, and at which location it will take place.

Welcoming and presenting the plans for the the next conference project, and making decisions about the subsequent one are part of the sovereignty of each assembly. These are its only two attributions, but they are respected by everyone. Attempts to break this non-written rule, or to link the line of Iberic conferences to some Iberic association or federation (that up to this moment hasn't come to pass, but which is still a permanent subject of discussion), or to some particular centre or association, have only helped to consolidate our way of doing things. We are certainly happy with the set up we have created, despite the enormous effort that it entails.

So, the line of Iberic Conferences has an independent existence, and is a legacy of all the people in Spain devoted in some way to Astrology. Anyone can attend as a listener or speaker by simply booking or presenting a proposal to the organizers that can be included in the programme they are preparing. And any person or group can also become responsible for its organization if his/her or their own proposal obtains the approval of the assembly.

Different and independent groups of people, then, and in different locations of the Sapanish territory, each taking turns, constitutes a very free and unusual rotation system (very astrological, by the way). This helps to give to each of our conferences a unique creativity, philosophy and personality, providing them every year with a new and stimulating character, and differentiating them from the conferences held in other countries or by groups of another nature.

And also from our Spanish sister organisations: "Jornadas del mediterráneo-premio Demetrio Santos", organised by the "Asociación de Astrólogos del Mediterráneo"; "Las Jornadas de Barcelona", organised by the "Asociación de Astrología de Cataluña" and "Las Jornadas de Madrid", organised by the "Asociación Astrológica Madrileña" - all of them having been running for many years now.

The names of our conferences have been constantly changing. The first ones received the name of "jornadas" (days) : the "Jornadas Astrológicas" of Madrid; of Benicassim (in which it was decided to give them numbers and continuity); of Barcelona, Arantzazu and Guadamar de Segura. In the sixth the name National Conference was adopted: 6th Congreso Nacional de Astrología, in Buitrago de Lozoya. The seventh and eighth, in Gijón and Málaga, kept to this. But the ninth took the name of Iberic Conference (9th Iberic Astrology Conference), which was held in the Monastery of Poio (Pontevedra). This name was used by the conferences of Palma, Valencia, Jaca, Toledo, Finestrat, Vilanova de Arosa, Núria and Bilbao, and it seems at this moment that it's here to stay.

Another important novelty, appearing in the ninth, was the choice of a slogan defining the philosophy of each conference, usually linked to the astrological meaning of its ordinal number. And so in the 9th conference, the slogan was "Astrology as a path"; in the 10th it was "Mallorca, meeting place"; in the 11th "Friendship and tolerance"; in the 13th "Astrology, root of cultures"; in the 14th "a bridge between cultures"; in the 15th "the astrologer is a freethinker"; in the 16th "there must be a path to the stars" and in the 17th "Bilbao capital of worldwide astrology". These slogans, which act as a mantra repeated throughout the year, from conference to conference, reflect the imagination, intention and way of understanding of the different organizers, and keep on feeding the short history and culture of the Iberic astrologic movement.

The organizers always do their best to publish a book collecting the works presented at the conference. It is not an easy task and, when they succeed in it, they deserve our congratulations. The sixth conference in Buitrago, the ninth in Poio, the eleventh in Valencia, the twelveth in Jaca, the fourteenth in Finestrat, the fifteenth in Vilanova (that also published a book on astrological poems and tales), the sixteenth in Núria and the seventeenth in Bilbao, succeeded in producing such a publication. But, when it is not possible, three independent astrological magazines, Mercurio-3, Symbolon and Eudemón, have been taking charge of the publishing of the speeches presented in the conference. And also these magazines inform people about the conferences and give reports about them after they have finished.

Even though at the first meeting in Madrid André Barbault attended as a speaker (Gauquelin wasn't able to but sent his speech which was read), the conferences have been basically nurtured by Spanish speakers. We had to wait until the 10th in Mallorca to have among us another foreigner, the French astrologer Alain Nègre. At the 11th in Valencia there was the Portuguese Mª Flavia de Monsaraz; at the 13th in Toledo the Brasilian Mina Kreimer, the Italian Grazia Mirti and again Alain Nègre; at the 14th in Finestrat, again the Italian Grazia Mirti, the Venezuelan Giselle Paravisini and the Russian speakers Veronika Tkachenco, Sergey Shestopalov and Galina Rechkovskaya.

This evolution took to present the 15th in Vilanova de Arosa in 1998 as an international conference with 14 speakers, out of total 35, coming from abroad (Portugal, Greece, Italy, France, Germany, Russia, Ireland, Great Britain, Argentina, USA and Belgium), and the attendance of around 80 (out of total 248) non-spanish people coming, mainly, from Portugal, Argentina and Italy. A new cycle of international iberic conferences was inaugurated, which will have its continuity with the 18th taking place in Madrid in 2001 under the slogan "Astrology for a new millenium".
